My tune for this week is by Mabel McVey – ‘Thinking of You’ which landed in my Spotify Discover playlist. It was love at first listen. The best way I can describe my sentiments towards this song is that it’s what Jennifer Paige – ‘Crush’ was to me in 1998. Which was everything!
I adore the simplicity and candy innocence of this track, topped up with an early 90’s funk. Super catchy and a nice deviation from the ‘club bangers’ that are engulfing RnB these days (bring back Miguel!).

Who is Mabel McVey?
Born in Malaga and raised in Stockholm, Mabel now spends most of her time in London. Her early 90’s sound can be easy explained as she is the daughter of Nineties singer Neneh Cherry, the pioneer of early R’n’B, and her dad is Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey. Mabel is still unsigned and has independently produced her tracks to date. Her music takes influence from the likes of Lauryn Hill’s beat-heavy sounds and LA girl Jhené Aiko but the lyrics come from a heartfelt, vulnerable place about opening up to a crush.
Beyond the music, I love Mabel’s look, reminiscent of Aaliyah and Missy’s ‘Beep me 911’ days. The video to ‘Thinking Of You’ is just like the song, cute and edgy. Enjoy.
