This week’s Tune of the Week is by Roy Wood$. A popular name for anyone keeping up with the fire tunes coming out of Drake’s OVO label. I spent so much of this weekend listening to #OVOSoundRadio that I’m hardly surprised it trended in the UK, and that an OVOSound artist would end up on my #TotW.
Roy Wood$ signed to OVO in 2014, not long after he released his debut EP Exis the following year. Exis is a brilliant and underrated EP that features one of my favourite songs of last year ‘Get you good’, as well as the popular ‘Drama’ feat. Drake which showcased on OVOSoundRadio. The Guyanese-Canadian has been coined as the rap version of Michael Jackson and credits his creativity to his ability to see beyond genre lines. I can attest to both statements.
Gwan Big Up Urself is much chirpier sound that the songs found in Exis and I like it. OVO are clearly set to take over the summer and have seasoned their music with a Caribbean that is more than welcome. I read in an interview with Roy Wood$ for Noisy that always managed to be quite successful with the ladies, and this single without a doubt, is one for the ladies.
